7 Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day

7 Ways to Celebrate International Women's Day | magazine.vaniday.com

This March 8, we commemorate International Women’s Day, a day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Here are 7 ways in which you show your support this special day.

Show your support for women-owned businesses

Challenge yourself to spend the day supporting women-owned businesses. Extra points if they are local. Here are some local skincare brands you should totally support — Sigi Skin and Rooki Beauty are both owned by women!

Raise funds for charities supporting women

While we are closer to gender equality than before, we should not forget those who are left behind. We can help forge women’s equality by donating to a registered charity or nonprofit that works for the advancement of women and girl. Some Singaporean women charities that you support include AWARE, Daughters of TomorrowPPIS (Singapore Muslim Women’s Association) and Society for Wings. You can also choose to support International Women’s Day charities of choice.

Write a thank you note to the special women in your lives

We often forget to give thanks in our busy, fast-paced lives. Writing a note of appreciation or taking the time to thank someone can make their day, and remind them how much we appreciate their sacrifices for us!

Treat yourself

Don’t conform yourself to pressure of society. Take a day off, whether it be in your diet (burgers, how about yes?), or book in for a massage at your favourite spa. Need some inspiration? We’ve got you covered. Prioritise yourself today — there’s lots of other ways you can do that.

Read a book by a feminist icon

Whether its Louisa May Alcott’s classic “Little Women” or a more modern venture such as “Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot” by Nikki Kendall, plop yourself down somewhere comfortable and relish in the writings of these female powerhouses. Not a book person? Check out this list for some ideas on where to start.

Wear purple

On International Women’s Day, we wear purple. Wear something purple show your support this March 8. Purple has been linked with women’s rights, ever since the suffragist movement adopted the shade in the early 20th century. It’s now the colour of International Women’s Day!

Take a selfie with your hand up

#ChooseToChallenge is the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day. Take a selfie to show your support and solidarity. Raise your hand high to show you’re in, and that you commit to choose to challenge and call out inequality. Use the hashtags #ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021 to encourage others to commit to helping forge an inclusive world!
